“Myeik, A Paradise of Natural Islands”
I like to share about Myeik. Actually people pronounce it “Beik” instead of “Myeik”. Myeik is not just pleasant and beautiful inland town in south part of Myanmar and also a natural combination of a large number of different size of islands. So “Myeik” represent both the city and the islands. For most of the tourists, Myeik is more popular as Mergui Island or Mergui Acrchipelago. In Adman sea, there are more than 800 islands that belong to Myeik. As the islands are untouched and natural, Myeik still stands as one of the blessing from God.
A long time ago, people don’t know much about the beautiful islands around Myeik. The inconveniences in transportation also interrupted the popularity of islands. Trading was the only business ran in Myeik before eco travelling and tour. As a bordering town and coastal region, the business was effortlessly flowing. There are many kinds of race and religions in Myeik. What makes Myeiks stand out from other cities is that the town folks are only interested in business but nothing else. That facts keeps Myeiks away from other potential social problems. As the business is always on point, the city, although small in size, is blooming with hopeful, hardworking people. The people of Myeik always look out for each other and put the welfare of the city as top priority, which makes the city never sleep.
The upgraded trading policies of the new government somehow leads the city business to a down fall. But that doesn’t really bother the people of Myeik. So people have found new business as fishery and palm oil as before. Better internet and the water transportation, people eventually found the islands of Myeik, the gifts of nature, the beautiful new paradises. More than 800 islands of Myeik shine way better than neighboring countries’ beaches. The people of Myeik who are already very visionary in business, started travelling as their new business since 2016.
This might sound exaggerated, but I can sincerely call the islands of Myeik “gems of various colors, shapes and sizes but equally precious”. Out of more than 800 islands, we can only go to a few. Even in that small number, the beauty and uniqueness is countless.
Globally appreciated pebble beaches can be found among Myeik islands along with the people of Salon tribe who are still enjoying their natural ways of living between boats, fish and traditions, the islands flooding with precious bird nests, and 5-starred islands with underwater coral reefs. All these priceless beauties make Myeik islands as one of the most precious treasures of Myanmar.
Trip to Myeik’s Island
Nowadays it’s very much easy to visit Myeik islands. You can also take day trips from Myeik city to its islands or spend a whole night there and enjoy all you want. For me, I went to every corners of Myeik and spent one night in the sea. And here are the islands I visited and fell in love with …
Thamee Hla Island- There are more sea rocks than the sand on the beach, but the snorkeling site of that island is remarkable. The natural coral reefs and the colorful schools of fish make the island worth travelling all the way to. One gentle reminder is the jelly fish, they sting bad so be ware!
Lay Island – The main attraction of that island is the sunrise and the sunset. There is a little lane that bridges the front and back of the island. You can walk through the rocks whenthe tides went down, and enjoy the boat ride when the tide is up. The water is transparently green. One note for swimmers is that the beach is quite steep. As there are food stalls at the beach, you can spend a night there in the tents. Of course it is not a 5 starred hotel, but there is water, there is electricity and food. What more could you possibly need?
By the way there are two irritative things. First one is because of electric power supply. On the islands is only two houses, the restaurant I mentioned above and local family house. That local family house has a sound box and so they play music all day long.That heavy noise of their music ruins my trip to enjoy chill time with the dancing sound of sea waves. That old granny even raises the volume though we request her to low it down when we can’t stand the noise. That way they play the music till there is no power supply. That’s first problem. Another problem is with the restaurant. Of course, the locals don’t really have much of an education. So they tend to be unmannered. Here, by unmannered, I mean that they love to play their music really loudly, they find noises fun. For them quietness and natural tranquility are boring that makes them really incompatible with the guests. The restaurant has the karaoke machine and regulars will definitely ruin your night. I can only fall asleep when they stop their music. The food is good and the atmosphere of the restaurant is also good but these tiny problems make me hesitate to spend the night at Lay Island. But as there was not much option, Lay Island was the only choice for me.
One unique thing of Lay Island makes me forget all these problems, which is the one and only island receptionists. The island receptionists even come down to the water just to give a warm welcome. They never leave the guests’ sides on the island and sometimes they hide shoes of us just to tease. And they will never fail to come down to the water again and bid you final farewell. With these cutest behaviors, who can possibly not love them? Now you might be confused about what I am talking about. I am talking about no one but the dogs, not just any dog, the guard dogs of the Lay Island.
Mount Mali Bird Nest – It is an island completely decorated with rocks, not an inch of beach to put your foot on. You can find cute little houses on the walls of the rock mountains, little houses with little ladders hanged. Outsiders are not allowed to approach. There are people who guards these houses. They look after the birds and keep the nests when the birds finally abandon them. It is an island where you can get all natural authentic bird nests. That Mount Mali of the island which stands out of all the other islands with beaches, holds its own beauty.
If you want to explore more, you can always go to Doan Nyaung Mine island where the original Salon tribe , aka Mawkin, habitats for now. You can learn about the traditions and habits of the Salon people, the heroes of the sea, which surprisingly haven’t changed much in years. Not naked like before, Salon people with modern clothing will not shy away from the strangers anymore. The fierce look they give, might give you the impression that they are aggressive. But how can you blame them when you know they have been very used to isolation from the world?
Normally, most of the tour groups enjoy their lunch at Doan Nyaung Mine. Some Burmese opened up the restaurants for the guests who came to see the Salons, which runs small but regular business on the island. Another interesting thing about Doan Nyaung Mine, apart from the Salon tribe, is the enormous Doan waterfall where the salt water and freshwater touches. After swimming in the sea and sunbathing on the boats, having a good shower at waterfall eases all you muscles and burned skins, a total oasis. A waterfall on an island like that, adds up the blessings of Myeik.
City Tour at Myeik
Like I mentioned before, Myeik is a place with several islands, but the place itself is a city that offers thousands of wonders. The dynamic of the city which is fueled by its fruitful business makes it even more adorable. In this costal city, you can still find the colonial buildings in the city alongside the docks which are still being used, and the fishery farms of lobsters and soft shell crabs.
You can admire the historical Sleeping Buddha statue which bridges the two islands called Pahtaw and Pahtet. You can enjoy the sunset, where the sun rests on the west shores of Pahtaw Pahtet islands, at Thein Daw Gyi Pagoda. My personal favorite is the Phayagyi street. A short lane which is decorated with colorful monasteries and rest houses is truly visually appealing for me. You can totally guess the religiousness of Myeik in that little street. The clean and gorgeous monasteries with remarkable arts and crafts reflect not only the discipline but also the artistic stand of the city.
I suppose you know more about the city and all the gems of islands of Myeik. It is no longer difficult to visit to Myeik. You can travel there by plane or by bus easily. With great accommodation facilities and exceptional sea food, Myeik is highly recommended. You can definitely find the most natural and authentic underwater beauties which will make you feel perfectly fit in with the nature. I, myself, guarantee that Myeik islands will never let you down.
