Myeik, a town with amazing local cuisine and sea foods
Myeik, a town with amazing local cuisine and sea foods.
One unique thing about Myeik is their sea foods. Once you have tasted sea foods from Myeik I am sure you can’t appreciate sea foods from any other places. For real! They have very disciplined and serious fishery. Since sea foods are freshly right from the sea, sweetness is remarkable. As you know, the fresher the sea food, the tastier it is, undebatable that almost every food in Myeik is delicious. And another good thing is that you can find food places in every corner of the town.
Famous fried Noodle, Myeik Kat Kyee Kite
Almost every towns in Myanmar has their own local specialty; Shan noodle at Shan State, Mote Hin Kharr in Yangon and Mhee Shay at Mandaly. So Myeik itself has its own signature cuisine. The most famous of them all is Myeik Kat Kyee Kite. It is made of flat rice noodle, sea foods, bean sprout, chickpeas, sliced sausage and egg. Of course, that spicy noodle dish is definitely the best in its town, the replica in other town can’t compare to the one in Myeik, no matter how expensive it is or how much sea foods they added.
I wasn’t aware at first too. Then I asked around and I found out that there is special sauce called “Pa Own” juice in recipe of Kat Kyee Kite. It is a fermented toddy juice, usually used as an ingredient in places around Myeik. In other town when they replace the sauce with other ingredients it makes huge different in taste. The pan also speaks alot. They used special pan, which is 2-feet diameter in size and flat in shape, which creates different in taste and texture.
- The most recommended Kat Kyee Kite shops in Myeik would be “Maung Win” at the corner of Myit Ngal Road, “Myat Phwal” at the corner of Kan Phyarr.
Traditional Best Snack Myeik Arpone
There is these best snacks in Myeik called “Arpone”, a kind of traditional food. Rice batter is cooked in a palm-sized pan, coconut milk is added fully covering all the batter. An egg is added and shredded coconut is the final topping. Arpone can also be found in other Tannithayi’s towns, such as Dawei and Kaw Thaung but Myeik definitely produces the best because it is full of rice batter rather than Dawei’s and Kaw Thaung’s and has real original taste of Arpone.
- In the outskirts of Myeik, in Sandawut village bizarre, there is this Arpone shop which is the most famous one. Although it is 30 min drive from town, people always make an effort. It opens at 2 o’clock in the afternoon. Small but famous shop is so good that people even have to buy Arpones from that shop as a souvenir when they go back to Yangon.
Coconut Milk’s Snack of Myeik
Probably because it is a place filled with coconut trees, most of the snacks contain generous amount of coconut milk. In Myeik, there is a famous snack shop called “Yatha Sone”, at the corner of B.E.H.S (1) School road. In that shop, there are so many coconut milk based snacks such as Tha Kway Yine (softly cooked black sticky rice, topped with coconut milk), Myeik’s Shwe Yin Aye (thin coconut milk, rice noodle, sago, sticky rice), Mone Lone Yay Paw (sticky rice balls floated in thin coconut milk), Mhawt Mont (jello stick and sweet potato slices in thin coconut milk).
Famous Myiek Juice “Lime Aye”
Like I said, Myeik has incomparable astonishing dishes. One of them is called “Lime Aye”. I was very intrigued about that and finally discovered that it is a drink based on black coffee. Black coffee with sugar and lime is shook well till it bubbles up and rested for a couple of days to make the coffee in more transparent state. Then, the transparent layer is filtered to another cup and the foams are put on top like ice cream. Such an exotic beverage, the bitterness of the coffee and the sourness of the lime never fail to freshen you up. The sweetness is also there too. The authentic Lime Aye, which you can enjoy only in Myeik.
Recommend Restaurant in Myeik
Myeik is the best place not only for snacks but for lunch and for dinner. Almost every restaurant in the towns has their special tastes of dishes. As you know, there are so many beaches in Myanmar and so a lot number of sea foods restaurants, too. But seafood dishes of Myeik have really unique and incomparable tastes rather than any other towns. The combination of their deliciousness and the freshness of their seafood always reminds me Myeik whenever I eat seafoods.
- If you like to taste Burmese cuisines, there is a traditional Burmese restaurant, called “A Shae Ywar”, in Myeik. It has been opened over 20 years and a real authentic Burmese restaurant.
With their own exceptional cooking style, they cook and transform seafoods into Burmese style and that fact makes their dishes the best. What my most favorite is oyster stew with sweetness. They cook palm-sized oyster with onions. I have never tasted that brilliant taste of oyster stew in my life before I came in to the restaurant. The oysters are tender and sweet. Not like the artificial sweetness of MSG, they are all so sweet in the most natural taste. I also learned that the sweetness of seafoods are decreased after freezing. So the more fresh seafood is cooked, the true original sweetness is there. Another interesting thing is about pineapple salad. Generally, Myanmar people eat it in straight way. Not by cooking. But in Myeik, people makes pineapple spicy salad with onions, chilli pepper, fish paste and dried shrimp and eat it as popular side dish of combination taste of sweet and spicy.
Dishes and food of almost other restaurants also has their own good tastes. You can also find, not only Burmese-styled dishes, Thai and Chinese fusion cuisines. If you want to enjoy variety of seafoods,
- “Shwe Hnin Si” restaurant in Kan Phyar Quarter and
- “Lotus” restaurant at Myay Ni St. are especially recommended.
- To enjoy Myeik evening with their fresh seafood barbeque, “Pin Lei May” in Aye Yeik Chaung Quarter,
- “Shwe Yarsu” and Hongkong Kitchen both at Strand Road are highly recommended restaurents.
So now you get the names of the best and authentic restaurants of Myeik in your mind. But there are still large number of astonishing restaurants left in town. These restaurants I mentioned above now are essential places you shouldn’t miss for food when you visit to Myeik. So travel and enjoy Myeik. And enjoying around Myeik’s islands is a must. Don’t miss that chance. Enjoy the undeniably good Myeik cuisines and grab your chance to learn something new and exciting about Myanmar.
